Indigenous History

As a non-Indigenous company that works with Indigenous governments and organizations, we understand that colonial research methodologies fail First Nations, Métis, and Inuit as they don’t account for Indigenous experiences and misrepresent Indigenous stories. We are committed to doing history differently. In all our work with Indigenous history we:

  • Prioritize building respectful relationships and centring Indigenous perspectives
  • Recognize the authority of Traditional Knowledge and oral history
  • Contextualize colonial sources
  • Respect the importance of self-government

The following projects provide practical examples of how we do Indigenous history:

Centering Indigenous Stories
Franklin Oral History Project, 2018 – 2022

Recognizing the Limits of Colonial Sources
Community Genealogy Project, 2018-2022

Supporting Indigenous Data Sovereignty
Survivors Secretariat, 2022

See how we are giving back to Indigenous communities!

We are honoured that First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Nations from across Canada have trusted us with their histories. The practice of history has a long way to go, and we have a lot to learn. We are grateful for the guidance and knowledge that our Indigenous partners and friends have shared with us over the years, and we commit to continuing to improve our field.
