Know History is looking for a Senior Historian who will bring their expertise in Indigenous history, legal research and land claims, and historical research methodologies to research and write analytical and litigation reports related to land claims, Aboriginal Law, and other Indigenous history topics. As a Senior Historian, you’ll also work closely with our Research Directors to design research plans, lead small teams on research projects, and provide feedback and mentor junior staff.
The successful candidate is able to interpret and present research in order to provide expert witness reports, advice, and testimonies as needed. They are a meticulous researcher who is deadline-driven, able to work independently and on a team, and passionate about Indigenous history and issues.
- Develop research plans, identify files, and conduct research related to litigation, treaties, land claims, and Statements of Facts.
- Advise on legal, archival, and historical research methodologies to create research plans and workflows for projects.
- Write and revise analytical/litigation reports, including specific claims, Statements of Facts, expert witness, and rebuttals.
- Lead research projects related to Canadian, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit history.
- Mentor junior staff on approaches to research process and writing.
- Assist with community outreach and engagement and develop positive relationships with First Nations and government organizations and representatives.
- Act as an expert witness when required.
- Hours: Full time (or option for part-time or contract work) with flexible hours
- Compensation: Starting at $80,000/year, with paid vacation, paid sick leave, and health and dental benefits
- Location: Options to work in either our Calgary or Ottawa offices or remotely within Canada
- Travel Required: Occasionally

Preferred Skills and Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a published historical researcher and writer, including but not limited to legal research and archival research.
- Demonstrated experience writing ligation reports for First Nation Land Claims (at least 1-2 reports).
- Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous and Canadian history, government, and legal issues.
- Knowledge and experience interpreting and working with legal research, including but not limited to treaties, land claims, and Aboriginal law (i.e., Section 35).
- Demonstrated experience with writing and editing analytical or legal reports and other publications, presentations, and products.
- Prior experience with providing research to support commissions (e.g., the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the National Inquiry into MMIWG) and community-based research is an asset.
- Experience as a consultant or expert witness on issues related to Indigenous history or peoples is an asset.
- Experience building collaborative, respectful relationships with First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit communities, as well as Federal or Provincial/Territorial government organizations and representatives.
- Strong written communication skills, particularly in plain language, are essential.
- Ability to work simultaneously on different projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
- A degree in Indigenous Studies or Legal Studies is preferred but a combination of relevant education and professional experience may be considered.
- English is the working language, however, the ability to speak an Indigenous language or French is an asset.
