Archival Research with The Survivors’ Secretariat
“The impact and the legacy [of residential schools] is felt far beyond the boundaries of communities,” Laura Arndt, Executive Lead for the Survivors’ Secretariat, shared at the Survivors’ Secretariate Year in Review Open House, held on August 31, 2022 at Six Nations of the Grand River.
Over the past nine months, Know History has worked closely with the Survivors’ Secretariat to collect over 12,000 archival documents that shed light on the history of the Mohawk Institute Residential School in Brantford, Ontario.
These documents name 4,581 children who attended the institute and provide details about their daily lives. This research has also identified 43 children who died while attending the institute. These deaths are in addition to the 48 previously recorded by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. Know History will continue to support the Survivors’ Secretariat through historical research.
