Know History is proud to host lawyer and historian Dr. Bruce McIvor for a discussion about his latest book Standoff: Why Reconciliation Fails Indigenous People and How to Fix it.
Bruce is a partner at First Peoples Law LLP, a law firm dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of Indigenous Peoples. He holds a law degree, a Ph.D. in environmental history and is a Fulbright Scholar. He is a proud Métis from Red River in Manitoba.
In Standoff, Bruce explores why reconciliation fails Indigenous Peoples and what needs to be done to fix it. He describes the historical and social forces that underpin the development of Indigenous law, criticizes the legal shortcomings, and charts a practical, principled way forward. Interwoven in the book are Bruce’s personal stories of growing up Métis and representing First Nations in court and negotiation. Bruce advocates for realistic path forward based on respect, recognition, and the implementation of Indigenous rights.
