S2E1 – We Are the Roots

February 12, 2019

About the Episode

In our second season opener, we are joined by Deborah Dobbins and Dr. Jenna Bailey to discuss their recent oral history project and documentary, We are the Roots: Black Settlers and Their Experiences of Discrimination on the Canadian Prairies.

The film explores the experiences of African American settlers to Western Canada, primarily those who came from the United States and settled in Alberta and Saskatchewan between 1905 and 1912. It includes the stories of 19 descendants of these original settlers, recorded in oral history interviews conducted by Dr. Jenna Bailey and Dr. David Este in collaboration with Edmonton’s Shiloh Centre for Multicultural Roots.

You can view the documentary online at Bailey and Soda Films.
